Moving home: Let us simplify the process

Posted on Friday, 10 May 2019 | Written by Hayward Moon

Moving home statistically is one of the top five most stressful things you can do in your life. We hear it all the time “moving is SO stressful!” that’s why we’ve put together some tips to simplify the process.

Preparation is key
Before you start packing anything, get a floor plan of the new property and number the rooms. This way when you come to boxing all your belongings you know exactly what box number goes where. Also, try a colour coded system that’ll tell you where your everyday items are. Organisation is key to a stress-free move.

Create a moving file
Moving house is like juggling with a ball too many. Sometimes, you’ll forget something, stumble and wonder whether it’s all worth it. That’s normal. To keep track of everything there is to do during a move, you need to create a moving file. Again, this should be done at the start of the process.

Your moving file can be a literal folder, or a spreadsheet – whichever’s easier. It should include a checklist of everything that needs to be done, with details of the various tasks, deadlines and, if applicable, contact information. Then, when you have a question or concern about something relating to your move, it’s just a matter of picking up the phone.

Book book book
With moving comes other expenses that are expected. Make sure you book everything ahead of time, to avoid the last minute panic. Talk to your boss and book a few days off work if need be. Ensure you book the removal van in plenty of time and the same goes for any furniture deliveries you may have going to the new house.

Packing up
The day is nearly here, but you have a few final things to pack. Our number one tip is to pack yourself an overnight bag, sounds silly as you aren’t going away. But trust us, after a long day of unpacking the last thing you want to do is rummage through boxes to find your toothbrush. Pack all the essentials that you will need for the next few days in a separate bag. Another great tip is to pack all your important items in one box and take it in the car with you. At least then, if the worst were to happen your passports, driving licenses, house deeds, wills, insurance papers, jewellery etc are safe with you.

The BIG day
The day has finally arrived, you’re feeling excited, nervous and slightly anxious. There are only a few final steps you need to take before you leave. Make sure you record all your utility meter readings. You will need to take these at the new property when you first arrive too. We recommend taking a photo of the meters for ease.
